Trichloroethylene (CHClCCl2) is a colorless, inflammable, chloroform-smelling liquid that is slightly soluble in water. The principal raw material for its production is ethylene. It is moderately toxic. Its usage has been dramatically decreased in recent years because of its ozone depletion potential, although it is still used in the vapor degreasing of metals.
