n-Octane (C8H18) is a colorless liquid that is insoluble in water. It is obtained by fractional distillation of petroleum. Octane is flammable and moderately toxic. It is used for the Octane Number calibration of antiknock properties of fuels. It is also used as a solvent and in organic synthesis.
