[Relative reaction time]

A dimensionless number defined by the identity

where τp is the time value characterizing the speed of transition of a liquid (gas) from a given state to the equilibrium state; τflow is the characteristic time of the flow; i.e., the time necessary for a particle of liquid to cover a distance equal to the characteristic length in the problem being examined.

Comment. For flows with homogeneous chemical reactions the value Kτ = 0 corresponds to the case of an equilibrium flow and Kτ → ∞ to the case of a frozen flow. For flows with heterogeneous chemical reactions the surface is said to be ideally catalytic when Kτ = 0 and noncatalytic when Kτ → ∞.
