Methylchloride (CH3Cl) is a colorless, sweet smelling gas that is slightly soluble in water. It is obtained by either the chlorination of methane or the reaction of hydrochloric acid with methanol. It forms a flammable mixture with air at low concentrations and is highly toxic. Its usage as a raw material for the production of CFCs has dramatically decreased in recent years, but it is still used in the production of silicones and synthetic rubber.
