Phenol (C6H5OH) is a white crystalline solid of distinctive odor. It used to be known as carbolic acid, as it was first isolated from coal tar. There are a number of processes for its production using cumene or benzene as a starting material. It is very toxic and contact with skin causes burns. Its main usage is in organic synthesis for the production of resins, pharmaceuticals, dyes and paints.
