Carbontetrachloride (CCl4)is a colorless liquid insoluble in water. It was one of the first organic chemicals to be produced on a large scale. Nowadays, it is usually produced by the chlorination of methane at high temperature. It is very toxic and narcotic. Its usage has dramatically decreased in recent years due to its toxicity, but it is still used on a small scale as a solvent.

Its physical characteristics are as follows:

Molecular weight: 153.8Critical temperature: 556.35 K
Melting point: 250.25 KCritical pressure: 4.560 MPa
Normal boiling point:349.85 KCritical density: 588 kg/m3
