Chloroform (CHCl3) is a colorless, sweet-smelling, moderately volatile liquid that is slightly soluble in water. It is produced by the chlorination of methyl chloride. It is moderately toxic and narcotic. Prolonged inhalation can be fatal. Its usage has been dramatically decreased in the last 50 years and it is nowadays mainly used as a raw material in the production of HCFC-22.

Some of its physical characteristics are:

Molecular weight: 119.4Critical temperature: 536.4 K
Melting point: 209.9 KCritical pressure: 5.470 MPa
Normal boiling point: 334.5 KCritical density: 498 kg/m3
