1-Butanol (C4H9OH) is a colorless liquid, slightly miscible with water. It is obtained either from butylaldehyde or by the fermentation of corn products. It has low toxicity, but it can act as an irritant to the eyes and the skin. Its main uses are as a raw material in the production of butyl acrylate, butyl glycol ethers and butyl acetate. Butanol is also used as a solvent for resins and paints and as a hydraulic fluid.

The physical characteristics of butanol are as follows:
