Noble or inert gases is the common name for six gaseous elements (helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon and radon) that belong to group VIII A of the Periodic Table. They are all characterized by having full outermost electron shells which makes them chemically unreactive under most conditions. The name 'noble' derives from their lack of chemical affinity for other elements, although only Helium, Neon and Argon are truly inert since no chemical reactions with other elements have been observed. The elements of this group are monatomic and, because of their simplicity, the physical properties of the first five members of the series are known relatively accurately.
